Photosynthesis Lab
1.) Photosynthesis Equation: CO2 + H2O + Energy --> C6H12O2 + O2
2.) Experiment Setup:
Materials: 100 mL of water, 1g of baking soda, baby organic spinach, hole punch, and a syringe.
Procedure: Use hole punch to cut out leaf disks from the baby spinach. Place the chads in the syringe, push the excess air out. Suck out water from the beaker and flick the syringe to get all of the air out. Create a vacuum with the syringe, and suck the air out, the push to replace the air with water. If done correctly, the leaves will sink to the bottom. Place the leaves in the beaker, and then place a bowl of water on top of the beaker, to create a heat sink. Then place the light over both. The heat sink allows for only the light to reach the leaves, thus blocking the heat. The light will create small bubbles of oxygen, and the leaves will eventually rise to the top. The independent variable is the amount of light, and the dependent variable is the rate of photosynthesis (time it takes to float). The data recorded would be the amount of time that each leaf takes to float.

3.) We could test the variable of light. I believe this would effect the "floating disks" by changing the rate of photosynthesis. The more light, the faster photosynthesis would occur.
4.) Questions:
a.) The purpose of creating a vaccum with the syringe is to pull the air out of the leaves and replace it with water so that they will sink.
b.) The leaf disks get the carbon dioxide needed for photosynthesis from the atmoshphere.
c.) The leaf disks float because the light causes them to undergo photosynthesis, thus producing oxygen (air pockets), which causes them to float.

The Three Respirometers
Respirometer A contains eight ounces of germinating peas
Respirometer B contains four ounces of beads, and four ounces of non-germinating peas.
Respirometer C contains eight ounces of beads.

Conclusion Questions
1.) Conclusion Statement: the dry pea seeds had the least amount of change, the beeds had the second least amount of change, and the germinating peas have the greatest amount of change. Based on this lab, it can be determined that germinating peas will use oxygen at a higher rate than dry pea seeds. Peas use more oxygen when they are germinating.
2.) The rate of oxygen consumption for the germinating seeds is a consumption of 1.45 mL per 5 minutes.
3.) The purpose of the Beads is to be a control variable. The purpose of KOH is to pull the carbon dioxide to the bottom of the respirometer. And the purpose of the Respirometer is measure the level of oxygen consumption of each variable.
